Sometimes it's Good to Look Back
August 29, 2017
The middle of this photo is the trail I hiked up today. I was feeling a bit discouraged because I'd hoped to be strong enough to hike Katahdin by the end of sabbatical. Instead I opted to simply hike in Baxter State Park on a trail that leads to the mountain.
I always look ahead at the trail but seldom behind. Today I paused and looked back down - yes down though it's hard to tell from the picture - and realized I was doing really well. No reason to be discouraged at all!
Going up the trail, though strenuous, is always easier than going back down. It was true today. I really missed hiking. My good hiking boots were beyond repair according to the cobbler. So I did my best to reattach the sole. They held out until a third of the way back down. So with some electrical tape and cautious steps I made it back to my car. A little sore and sweaty but really glad I am stronger. I once again found there is nothing like a good pair of boots! Trust your feet! They know where to go.
Now I'm waiting to hear from friends who did hike Katahdin today. Hope to see them and hear how it went. It's a long day on the trail.
I head back to church Sunday. This time of renewal has been a restorative time in so many ways.
More about that later. Just remember that it's good to look back so you can see how far you've come.
